Two things to check:

On the emaultor, when doing the HotSynch ensure that "Modem", not "Local" is highlighted.

On the Tablet there should be a red and blue circle in the bottom right system tray.  Click on that and ensure that "Network" is available under the settings (other options are USB etc..)
